The New - Week 1

It's here!

November 1st.

The day I officially start 'The New'.

Hard to believe it!

I'm SO excited!

For those few people who have been following my blog (thank you!), the suspense is over!

This is the day that I announce my first 'New' thing

(drum roll)................................

It's...

Belly Dancing!

That's right, I have decided to take belly dancing classes and my first class starts tonight! Now, while I kinda get the gist of what belly dancing is, I have no idea what this first class is going to be like. What exactly does one wear to a belly dancing class? Hopefully not what real belly dancers wear because I'm not sure anyone really wants to see my naked midriff...not yet anyways! Lucky for me, the place where I am taking these classes has a website which includes a FAQ section and sure enough, one of the questions is "What do I wear to class?"

Answer "a tank top, t-shirt, crop top, with leggings or Yoga or track pants, hip scarf with or without coins, bare feet or ballet slippers."

Tank top - check
Yoga pants - check
Bare feet - check
Hip scarf - hmmm...could that be like a regular scarf that you just tie around your waist?  I'm going to have to do some more research! Thankfully I have someone 'on the inside'. My best friend Deb has been belly dancing at this studio since the beginning of September (so she's practically a pro at this ha ha).

After a quick (1 hour) phone call to her, here's the deal - hip scarves are apparently scarves with bells on them that you wear on your hips and you can buy them there. Deb said there are a TON of them to choose from. (Mental note: get there early). I have also learned that belly dancing is great for your core muscles (translation: be prepared to be sore on Wednesday).

My belly dancing class is a 6-week beginner intensive program. The website says this class requires "No previous dance experience just an open mind and the willingness to have fun and learn a beautiful, new dance form!"  Okay, I think I can handle this!  Reading further, I discover "get ready to feel great about yourself as you learn to move your body in the most feminine of ways and feel more empowered and alive than you ever have!" Awesome!  Then I read this part "It is not uncommon for a new student to stay with the Beginner intensive program for a period of 3 to 6 months to be fully trained and ready to move to the next level." (Translation: there are going to be other 'beginners' in this class who aren't total newbies like me. Great.) The one saving grace is that Deb will also be in my class which should make for a lot of laughs (on her part).

Okay, I think I am as prepared as I will ever be. Despite being a tad nervous, I am really excited!

So watch out Shakira cuz baby there's going to be a new belly dancer in town and these hips don't lie!  (ha ha ha ha ha)
